Summer is heating up across AIAA! We are enjoying many in-person gatherings, as well as connecting for online events and through Engage. The work of the dedicated AIAA volunteer leaders and incredible staff is moving our industry forward in all three of our Domains—Aeronautics, Aerospace Research and Development (R&D), and Space.
You also can read more about each Domain on their new web pages (Aeronautics, Aerospace R&D, Space). This part of the website will be updated frequently with the content AIAA continues to generate in each Domain, so bookmark these pages and return often.
The Aeronautics Domain was on full display during June and July, most notably at the 2022 AIAA AVIATION Forum in Chicago. It was great to see nearly 1,800 of you there in person, with nearly 600 more of you joining virtually. Over the course of the week-long forum we gained insights, heard presentations, and engaged in lively dialogue that is advancing the state of aeronautics toward even safer, more sustainable, and smarter practices. We also explored topics from the Aerospace R&D Domain, including cybersecurity and digital engineering.
During the week, several speakers sat down for brief interviews sharing additional timely ideas and insights. We taped these interviews in the STUDIO, a new feature in the Exposition Hall adjacent to the HUB—the familiar AIAA central gathering place. Be sure to check out the video interview with AIAA President Laura McGill on the vision for AIAA and how members can gain value from their membership by getting involved.
We hosted two editors from Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine, Graham Warwick and Guy Norris, in the STUDIO. They taped their weekly Check 6 Podcast where they recapped the forum and talked in-depth with NASA’s Rich Wahls, Mission Integration Manager, Sustainable Flight National Partnership, Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.
Rich had been part of the Forum 360 session earlier in the day when NASA announced its plans to develop technologies with industry partners to shape a new generation of lower-emission single-aisle airliners that passengers could see in airports in the 2030s. We are honored NASA made this important announcement to reach the aviation community while we were gathered during the forum.
I also had the chance to share more about where AIAA sees the future of aeronautics heading in an article entitled, Aeronautics in the 21st Century: Safe. Sustainable. Smart., published in the July issue of Tech Briefs magazine (pg. 32).
We were pleased to host the 2nd Annual AIAA Leadership Symposium in conjunction with the forum. Thank you to the volunteer leaders who made this important event happen and especially those of you who attended in person and virtually. We value the input we received during the rotating breakout sessions on Creating Organizational Alignment, Building Program Content, and Building a Leadership Pipeline.
As we turn our attention to the fall, we are planning several programming elements in the Space Domain, along with some topics from the Aerospace R&D Domain, to bring our community together to address key issues. Reserve your spot now—we want your participation to help us move these topics forward.
